Spring Brings Brief Respite To Economic Decline

A COMBINATION OF SUNNY WEATHER AND A LATE EASTER HOLIDAY saw retail sales grow at their fastest rate in three years, British Retail Consortium (BRC) figures have revealed. In addition, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said its latest data showed the UK was showing ‘tentative signs‘ of a pause in the economic slowdown.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors was also talking-up the housing market with new buyer enquiries rising for a sixth consecutive month — and at their fastest pace since August 1999.

Those findings tally with recent surveys from mortgage lenders, suggesting that housing market activity has picked up from last year’s record low, and that prices are falling more slowly. However, RICS cautioned that this was an improvement — not a turnaround.
